Hernando Cortes Pizarro was his full name in Spanish. He was born in 1485 in the kingdom of Castile, in Medellin, Spain. He was born into a family of lesser nobility. His family was an upper class family, although his parents weren't rich. He was rather sickly as a child, and he was the family's only son. At the age of 14 his parents sent him to university at the University of Salamanca to study law. But Cortes aspired to do something greater. He was quite reckless in school. He learnt how to write and speak Latin. After two years of failing his courses he returned to his home. But he found himself not to be happy there either. As tales of the enigmatic 'New World' emerged, Cortes wanted to be a part of it. After a while of not doing much, he chose to follow the life of a soldier. He joined an expedition to sail out to the 'New World' but he didn't make it aboard. Around the 1500's plans were made for Cortes to sail to the Americas to see some distant relatives. But an unexpected injury to Cortes meant that he was unable to complete the trip.
